The Cold Quiet

2/1/2026

Snow

To be honest I am not a fan of winter. Growing up in South East London during the 1970's I have come to realise that I was a fortunate child. With both Mum and Dad working, we were always warm and well fed. These days, having trimmed our daily expenditure to the bone, we are well fed - but the Inky Garden home is bleak in winter. Houses in Bulgaria are not constructed well. They are thrown up with haste, and a prayer! And, despite Mr Inky's best efforts plaster boarding/insulation and double glazed windows the house remains glacial and damp unless a fire is kept burning 24/7. This is a luxury we sadly cannot afford.

A smattering of snow fell last night, and as usual the windows of the bedroom are streaming with condensation. A peculiar phenomenon after extensive home improvements.

Muffled Grey World

The Inky Garden garden is forlorn, a mess if I am honest. At the end of a hectic Summer season I delay my tidy up until early spring; leave nature about her quiet business throughout the Winter months. Hands up! I am a lazy, reluctant gardener. My horticultural activities borne from necessity, the desire for organically grown grub. I'd rather be in my studio creating. Or writing poems.

As I type It has started to snow again. Chubby flakes of unappreciated loveliness. For a snowy landscape is beautiful, but the shine somewhat dims when you can see your breath as you creep around indoors. I remind myself that I am fortunate; my thoughts turn to the homeless, and the millions of people suffering unnecessarily in a world of abundance.

Keeping Warm

I will make myself a cup of Golden Milk. Sip it quietly in bed before bundling myself up in more layers than an obese onion, and going about my day.

Who knows! Yes, it’s cold, but I might even take a moment to breathe in the crisp air and appreciate the ephemeral beauty beyond the Inky Garden walls.

Golden Milk

A cup of milk gently brought to the boil with a 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of pepper, a pinch of cinnamon and honey to sweeten. Hot, comforting goodness with proven benefits to support health.

BTW, if you too are a tad chilly I have some great hoodies, and sweats to help keep you warm in the shop! HERE.

Meanwhile I wish you warmth, and abundance.

With love, and thanks;

Linda x
